Journey report by BestHike editor Rick McCharles.
A brilliant well-liked acclimatization hike is a steep, 1,000-meter climb up free volcanic scree to the bottom camp of one of many world’s most iconic peaks.
Accessible as a day journey from Quito or — higher — through surrounding lodges like Secret Backyard Cotopaxi, which is what I did.
We began early morning when the climate is usually higher. Picked up mountain bikes en route.

It’s a fantastic a part of the world.
One spotlight was recognizing a “Andean Wolf” on the drive up. And once more on the best way down the mountain. It appears extra like a long-legged fox.

From the parking zone, it’s 45 minutes to 1.5 hours uphill. (A lot sooner again right down to your automobile.)

Most proceed on to succeed in the glacier at about 5000m.

We had been all checking our units to see if we’d reached 5000m. We did.

One photographer from South Africa had by no means seen snow. He determined to climb proper into the glacier. … In all probability not the most secure choice.

We then dropped right down to the Base Camp refuge (refugio) at 4,864 meters (15,953 ft) for a scorching drink and/or soup.

A festive vibe.

We slid again down the mountain in delicate, protected ash.

A easy, however memorable day hike.

Secure however thrilling to complete was rolling down the mountain highway on bikes.

Extremely really useful. BUT we had one in our group who felt altitude sufficient to solely go so far as the refuge. That’s typical for many teams. Be cautious.
