SUMMIT DAY

Tim’s nice selfie (tim_de_bruijn on Instagram)

Awoke on the lake earlier than daybreak.  Went straight to the hotsprings by myself.  Had the recent tub to myself.

We packed up camp rapidly.

Mentioned goodbye to the lake.

There are just a few bridges on this journey.  Extra typically you scramble down — and again up.   It should be depressing within the rain.

Hardly ever are there stone steps.  This ain’t Nepal.

We had about 600m to achieve again climbing as much as the 2nd crater rim from the lake.

It was powerful.

Once I say powerful, along with being technical, we more and more needed to cope with slippery ash.

As soon as on the ridge, we set-up our tents. Had lunch.  Then a brief lie down till 2pm.

One among these pests truly went inside Mason’s tent whereas he was there! Cheeky.

We’d determined as a gaggle to go for sundown right this moment somewhat than dawn the next morning.  This turned out to be our greatest resolution.

Meaning we’d climb one other 1100m making an attempt to get to the highest earlier than the sundown.  A deadline.

It seemed doable to me.

BUT it acquired more and more slippery and dusty as we ascended.

As soon as above the clouds, we have been motivated by the wonderful vista.

Attractive views — although it was dusty plodding in sections.

Very, very slippery — all of us used programs to maintain scrambling slippery scree.  I did bouts of 20 steps.

Made it!  And properly earlier than sundown.

Only one different group tried our itinerary.  Maybe half their group completed, nearly sundown.

Actually, I left the highest even earlier than sundown as I needed some visibility on the scree part on the high earlier than it acquired darkish.

Descent turned out to be pretty simple.  Principally screeing by means of the unfastened mud and rock (scree).

Views on the best way down have been even higher than on the ascent.

Finally we needed to activate our headlamps.  I held mine in a single hand, discovering it simpler to direct the beam.

Exhausted, we had dinner in our tents.  And went to sleep early.
