Volunteer Spotlight: Meet David Martin

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet David Martin

David Martin has been a devoted Volunteer Trip volunteer, and has lately celebrated his tenth annual journey this yr!

Touring all the way in which from Canada, David usually joins a number of journeys every year, supporting path tasks throughout the U.S. Alongside the way in which, he’s shaped lasting friendships with fellow volunteers — a lot of whom now coordinate to reunite on future journeys collectively. Whether or not working onerous on the path or unwinding at camp, David has grow to be a well-known face and valued member of the Volunteer Holidays neighborhood.

We caught up with David to replicate on his wide-ranging experiences throughout ten memorable journeys. Right here’s what he needed to say:

How did you first uncover American Mountain climbing Society’s Volunteer Holidays?

I first discovered of AHS’s volunteer weeks in 2014 from a fellow hiker on the Tour du Mont Blanc trek who was energetic in AHS. I had completed an analogous volunteer program within the UK (the Nationwide Belief’s “Working Holidays” but it surely was winding down) and he urged the AHS.

What has stored you coming again yr after yr for 10 years of volunteering?

Each VV week I’ve completed has been completely different and particular, though I’ve completed my considered one of my favourites twice — the Champlain Space Trails simply east of New York State’s Adirondack Park). Working exterior, totally on trails, in numerous scenic areas, with nice folks dedicated to nature and outside entry — this retains me coming again.

Out of all of your journeys, is there a favourite reminiscence or a second that stands out as particularly significant or unforgettable?

Many unforgettable moments, however one which brings me again is watching the dawn over Vermont’s Inexperienced Mountains from Camp Dudley, NY with my VV pals (our house base for the Lake Champlain week) after which sundown over the Excessive Peaks of the Adirondacks from the opposite facet of the camp.

You talked about that 4 of the 8 folks in your present crew have volunteered collectively earlier than — what has it been like constructing long-term friendships by way of path work?

This final week at Nantahala was particular as a result of I had volunteered earlier than with 4 of the seven others in our crew!  (And the hospitality from native sponsor Jim and the every day work and off-day hike management from Krista had been implausible.)

A few of us e-mail one another particularly when the “AHS early chicken record” comes out for the following yr’s volunteer holidays.  This yr’s crew obtained on very effectively so I’m positive we are going to hold speaking about AHS and plenty of different issues, too!

Each on the path and off, AHS individuals spend quite a lot of time in the course of the week speaking, sharing favourite hikes and journey locations, and studying about one another.  (This previous week, much more time collectively than traditional, as we had a working TV for watching school basketball and consuming dinner in a ravishing lodge/house.)

Are these pals that you simply recruited, or did you meet them by way of AHS?

I met all of them by way of AHS.

How does working as a part of a devoted volunteer crew improve the general expertise of the journey?

This manner of organizing volunteers isn’t just environment friendly and useful for the native path sponsor group, however provides to the camaraderie and recollections of our week.  (We don’t have any related week-long volunteer preparations like this in Ontario, the place I’m from — our loss.)   I can consider only a few occasions in my 10 AHS weeks the place the duties weren’t both in lovely locations, or gave us new abilities, or had been productive and useful domestically (perhaps the unnamed place the place we moved gravel for a full day beside a fairly accessible street).

What would you say to somebody who’s interested by signing up for his or her first Volunteer Trip?

Because the NIKE advertisements say, “simply do it!”  You’ll find it irresistible, and benefit from the firm, and possibly uncover a state, park or path that you simply haven’t been to earlier than!

Should you needed to describe your Volunteer Trip expertise in only a few phrases or a brief phrase, what would they be?

Make new pals and contribute to pure locations and trails throughout America!

David added, ” I like the truth that AHS has numerous selections yearly, and has wonderful native sponsor teams. I’ve been to 9 completely different locations (twice at Camp Dudley in New York State — PS:   I actually hope we’re there once more this fall!) in six completely different states. I’ve additionally completed volunteering with two of the sponsor teams as a “native volunteer” after the official AHS weeks.

I’m all the time impressed how far many AHS individuals come, many flying.  We had a big group from Texas at Camp Dudley/Champlain Trails final fall.
