Tucked into the quiet excessive plains of northern New Mexico, Maxwell Nationwide Wildlife Refuge grew to become the backdrop for every week of hands-on path restoration and new connections. A small however devoted crew got here collectively to assist reopen the Cottonwood Path and Day Use Space — an area that had lengthy been overgrown and underused.

The work concerned trimming useless elm branches, mowing and raking the path, and making ready it for resurfacing with gravel. Tools challenges meant plans shifted alongside the way in which, however the crew tailored shortly. “Whereas we didn’t end all the work we had deliberate as a result of some challenges with tools, we left the picnic space in a lot better form than after we arrived,” one volunteer shared.
