Journey report by BestHike editor Rick McCharles

I hiked the North Coast Path in 2012.

Vowed to return to the seashores on the Cape Scott Path. In the future. One of the best a part of the North Coast Path.

In 2025 I waited for good climate. And headed again to this paradise.

The worst a part of this journey is the 60km drive in on a gravel highway. Carry a superb car.

Highlights for a lot of on this distant N.W. nook of Vancouver Island is wildlife. Particularly bears and the shortly evolving coastal wolves.

The path itself is tremendous fascinating. Loads of boardwalk.

Among the previous development timber have been minimize up to now. However there’s nonetheless loads of fascinating greenery.

First cease is incredible San Josef Bay (3-4km from the car parking zone).

shocked on the magical surroundings 😀

From there, I continued on to the largest and finest seashore of all ➙ Nels Bight.

There are a few campsites on the way in which with platforms.

Proceed to Nels if in case you have the time and vitality.

This was near the place I camped in 2012.

Sundown was incredible on the west coast.

Right here’s the view from my tent.

No picture enhancing.

Pit bogs are first rate.

Remember to lock up all of your meals on arrival as bear sightings are virtually assured. (I noticed only one bear subsequent morning. Unfortunate. Everybody else noticed extra.)

Climate on awakening was much more typical. Overcast with fog.

It may be very muddy. Carry good footwear.

On the return to the car parking zone, I finished to learn signboards and go to the historic websites.

From 1896-1907 roughly 100 Danish settlers tried to ascertain a self-governing farming and fishing neighborhood. It was extraordinarily tough.

A 7-foot-high dyke constructed to guard these flatlands was worn out the first yr.

Later, the federal government provided incentives to all. By 1912 greater than 600 folks have been homesteading within the Cape Scott space. By 1917 many of the settlers had left the realm, forsaking no matter they might not simply pack out, together with farm instruments, buildings, stoves, equipment, and automobiles.

Strolling out appeared to go extra shortly than strolling in. That always occurs to me on out and again hikes.

All the time a pleasure to hike temperate rain forest.

I do hope I get again to the seashores at the least as soon as extra on this lifetime. 😀
